Trekking Details

For who?

The Mixila waterfall  trekking is currently the most popular trekking with overnithts in tents.  Disconnect 2 days from the rest of the world and reconnect with yourself and the surrounding nature.

For who ?

This trek is for people who have a trekking experience already. The part of the trail in the canyons where you need to hop over big rocks is advanced, about 4 hours in total. Most parts are moderate to easy.  You are in a very good physical condition to face some challenges : steep climbs and descents, taking off shoes to cross rivers, climb over some rocks, walking long distances.  You are not afraid of a real adventure and very basic (nothing) infrastructure.

Your guide may have to change the itinerary depending on the weather conditions.  Some parts can get really tricky or even dangerous.

This description is written for a trekking under normal weather conditions.

Your guide brings cereal bars, fruits and cookies as a snack and makes a lunch with bread, cheese, tomatoes, etc..

Overnight in tents

A night in a tent is an adventure on itself, especially sleeping on top of the giant Poção waterfall.

You sleep in a simple and clean bedroom.

At the campsite, there is no infrastructure at all. No toilets, no chairs, no tables.  It is 2 days back to very basics.

The breakfast and dinner your guide prepares are ALWAYS delicious !  He prepares everything on a few rocks and simple wooden or gas fire.

In the high season there are always other groups of tourists in the canyon and campsite. It is nice to tell stories about your hiking experiences.
In the low season it can happen that we are the only group that overnight at this incredible place.

Itinerary

Mixila 2 days

Day 1 – Lençóis, Serra do Bode, Cachoeira do Capivari, Cachoeira do Poção

From Lençóis, we will drive along the old mining road ( dirt road ) for 45 minutes.   The trail starts with a flat part, but after 20 min there is a very strong ascent, called the subida da Serra do Bode.  You will have beautiful views of the Marimbus swamp. Approximately 2:00 h later we will arrive at the Capivari Waterfall.  This great waterfall offers an incredible swim.  And we will stay here for pick nick.  In the afternoon we will hike for another 40 minutes until the Poção Waterfall.  You can have another swim here.  This place if where we will set up camp.   Enjoy the delicious dinner made by your guide on a wooden fire.  Now it is just chilling and stargazing and sleep early.   Hope you have a good sleep on that mattress in the tent.  The day after you need your energy to enter the canyon until the Mixila waterfall.

Day 2 – Cachoeira do Poção, Cachoeira do Mixila, Serra do Bode, Lençóis

After a strong breakfast for energy, we start the hike by entering the canyon of the Capivari River.  It is 2 hours at least in total from the Poção to the fantastic Mixila waterfall. The first part of the trail is mostly in the jungle and sometimes over the riverbed.  Every step deeper in the canyon is more difficult and more special.   After 1 hour the canyon walls close and we need to swim at two spots, real adventure!  The last hour is really an adventure as you can wet your feet, walk over big rocks and are deep in the green canyon, it feels like you are on an expedition.

When we arrive at the waterfall, it will be around 12h.  You will have time for a (cold) swim.  Depending the weather we eat our picknick at the waterfall of at a place with a bit more sunshine.  We hike back to the campsite, where we pick up our equipment and return by the descent of the Bode mountain range until the road where we started the hike the first day.   A jeep will be waiting for us to take us back to Lençóis.

Although we are not really a trekkers family, we are used to travel, camp and walk. To this profile the four tours we did were perfectly : for a start an exploring afternoon (Devil’s Pool & Pai Inacio), of course the Paty Valley (one day, from the top) and a two day’s tour really finished it off with the Buracão.  All these parts were linked by Pieter’s experienced and entertaining (music, stories) cardriving on asfalt as well as dirtroads

Peter Jorna, Netherlands

We just finished a 3 days trekking with Pieter from Diamantina Mountains in the Patti Valley (about a 2 hours drive from Lençois) and were very fortunate to have him as our tour guide in this remote and stunning area.  Very helpful, encouraging and patient guide, providing us with surprisingly great lunches. Hope to make it once more to this lovely place.

I totally recommend “Diamantina Mountains”! We booked 4 tours with them and everything was amazing.
Peter and Louise acted always in our interest and were very dedicated to satisfy our needs and desires. The prices of the tours are very reasonable and you get a great value for your money.
